Engineers Without Borders Sweden join forces with Sandvik employees to map the unmapped

In April 2025, we partnered with Sandvik employees and other volunteers to host a virtual Missing Maps Mapathon, contributing meaningfully to critical humanitarian initiatives. The event focused on mapping overlooked and remote areas to help ensure that emergency aid can reach the communities that need it most.

A total of 35 participants joined from across Sweden and internationally. Together, they mapped 3,150 buildings and made 3,282 edits on OpenStreetMap (OSM), a collaborative mapping platform. This particular Mapathon centred on the Sivasagar District in Assam, India—an area still grappling with the aftermath of last year's severe flooding. By mapping infrastructure such as roads and buildings, volunteers are strengthening the capacity of humanitarian organisations to respond to crises more effectively and support longer-term community resilience.

In a collaboration with the podcast “How to Solve the Problem”, we meet Warwick Kendrick, CEO of our partner Aurora Construction Consultancy, in an interview about the building and real estate crisis and the future of the construction sector.

Are we building homes for people that don’t exist, how is it affecting the economy and what will be the impact Europe’s real estate market?

In this episode, we hear Warwick Kendricks, CEO at Aurora Construction Consultancy and a chartered member of Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, on the crisis no one is talking about - why we are building apartments that no one can afford and why the era of urbanization in Europe is over.
