Beekeeping project takes flight in Tanzania

The beekeeping project in Tanzania is finally underway! Our volunteer, Martin Bennrup, is currently on site together with Clara Bitakwate, Project Manager at Mavuno Projects, testing new equipment and training local beekeepers.

Funded by Sida, the project was launched in October 2025 and aims to empower small-scale farmers in Chonyonyo, Tanzania. The local community is being introduced to modern beekeeping techniques that will improve honey yields, support environmental sustainability, and create new economic and employment opportunities.

- We have succeeded in producing the first honeycombs, and the results were good! Waziri Kazinja, the local carpenter, has made an initial prototype of a frame that he will start manufacturing. He will also rebuild a number of beehives to make it possible to stack treasure boxes on them, says Martin Bennrup.

Testing the new equipment requires precision and timing.

Waziri Kazinja, carpenter, makes adjustments to the beehives constructions.

Training local beekeepers

In addition to improving equipment, Clara Bitakwate and Martin Bennrup are holding seminars with local beekeepers using a “train-the-trainer” approach. Through discussions and dialogue, participants are learning how to manage modern and efficient beekeeping—and how to pass this knowledge on within their communities.

- Our next task will be to visit the local beekeepers and take a closer look at their hives, says Martin Bennrup.
