“I have learned a great deal” — Andréa Möller shares her experience of the mentorship program with Sandvik

Our mentorship program together with our main partner Sandvik is coming to an end - for this season! For seven months, student and junior members of EWB-SWE have connected with professionals at Sandvik on how to navigate future career transitions and learn about the professional life of an engineer.

In October last year, 14 students and junior members of Engineers Without Borders Sweden was paired up with senior professionals at Sandvik, a global leading high-tech engineering group and our main corporate partner.

Andréa Möller was one of the mentees this season. Andréa is studying industrial design at Chalmers University in Gothenburg. Besides her studies, she is an engaged member of the EWB Local Student Group at Chalmers. We asked Andréa about her experience with the program:

1. What have you learned from your participation in the mentorship program?

— I have learned a great deal about how a major corporation like Sandvik operates, and I've gained specific insight into how Sandvik Coromant works and what they do. It has been very exciting to see that much of what I am learning during my studies is actually applied in the professional world—ranging from general workflows to specific methodologies.

2. What will you take away from this mentorship experience moving forward?

— When I applied for the mentorship, it was primarily because I wanted to get an idea of potential career paths, as I had no idea what I wanted to do in the future. However, through this program, I’ve realized that you never really know for sure, and that’s okay. You never stop learning new things, even once you start working; you continue to evolve and set new goals.

— I’m taking away the lesson that instead of stressing over a long-term career path, you can focus on more immediate things—like which course you want to take or which student association you want to join. Those decisions will eventually lead you down the path you’re meant to take.

3. What is your advice to anyone interested in applying next year?

— My advice to anyone interested is to just apply, even if you aren't entirely sure what you want to focus on or what exactly you’ll "do" with a mentorship. You figure it out along the way. It is a valuable experience, and you will learn things even if they aren’t what you initially expected.
